Preludio - The Art of Introduction
During the 17th and 18th Centuries, preludes were played by instrumentalists as an introduction before a suite or sonata. The performer would warm up and tune instruments by improvising within the key of a piece. This practice slowly turned into creating composed preludes, which also served the function of introducing the character of a piece.
This programme explores preludes of various styles, as well as music with similar introductive and improvised characters.
